The Manual of Emergency Airway Management, 4th Edition, by Drs. Ron Walls and Mike Murphy recently received a 5-star rating from Doody Enterprises book review. Of the 2000-plus books Doody's reviews each year, only 8% achieve the 5-star ranking.
The book covers the basic concepts of airway management, how to classify airways, and how to augment oxygen delivery. It then moves into tracheal intubation and highlights the latest technologies in video laryngoscopy, fiber optics and surgical airway management. Later chapters discuss pharmacology, pediatric airway management, the EMS airway and difficult clinical situations, including trauma, pregnancy, geriatric and obese patients, among others. The reviewer, Michael D. Zwank, MD, RDMS, FACEP (University of Minnesota Medical School), states "This is an excellent resource for any practitioner who deals with airway management. It is easy to read, nicely illustrated, and offers clear instruction as well as urging practitioners to think critically about the airway decisions they make. This edition addresses the new technologies relating to video laryngoscopy as well as some new suggestions for management of pharmacological pretreatment."
